Frequently Asked Questions
What are the benefits of martial arts?
Where do we begin...
To start, the marital arts is great for your physical wellbeing. Not only will you build your muscle strength and endurance, but you will also build bone density through temperament (strengthening the bones through repeated impact) drills. You will see a drastic increase in your cardiovascular endurance as well. At 412 Martial Arts, we also focus on building flexibility and mobility, especially in the adult classes, because although strength and endurance are important, it is your mobility that will keep your body maintained and feeling good! Other physical benefits include coordination, balance, and improvement of gross and fine motor skills.
Once you start to see the physical benefits of the marital arts, the mental benefits will soon follow. Noticing a positive difference in your physicality will build your confidence. Learning how to control techniques and your strength as well as the discipline that is learned through the traditional side of our system will surely build self-control. Other mental benefits include emotional regulation and memory retention.
Finally, there is a social benefit to the martial arts as well! You will make friends in a community of likeminded, hard working people. We promote a team atmosphere by hosting events outside of the dojo such as summer picnics and camps, holiday parties, a yearly banquet, and other events throughout the year. Not to mention, Impact Christian Church would love for you to get involved in their community as well!

is martial arts safe?
With any contact sport comes risk of injury. Students are trained to control their techniques when working with their training partner as not to hurt anyone. Protective gear such as hand gear, foot gear, and head gear are required during kumite (fighting). The instructors are also continually monitoring students anytime there is physical contact between students to ensure that techniques are being performed correctly to help eliminate the risk of accidental injury. Although we do as much as possible to maintain a safe and supportive training environment, accidents can happen.
Am i too old to start training?
Of course not! Martial arts is an extremely adaptive sport that people of all ages can train in. Everyone deserves to learn how to protect themselves.
How long will it take to get a black belt?
412 Martial Arts is not one of those martial arts school where students will get a black belt in two years. We believe that a black belt is not just a set of physical requirements, but it is also a state of mind. A black belt should have a certain level of confidence, humility, situational logic, and respect for the art. This is why we have an age restriction of at least 18 years of age to earn a senior black belt.
It typically takes at least 8 years for a student to earn a black belt in our system. Even then, there is still more learning to do. As a martial artist, the journey never ends.

What makes 412 martial arts different than other schools?
Since 412 Martial Arts is made up of six different styles of martial art, we have the capability to choose some of the most effective and efficient techniques from those systems. The instructors are also dedicated to being lifelong learners. They constantly train, learn, and adapt techniques to refine their own skills for the betterment of their students and the system.

What is the structure of the classes?
Our classes begin with a 10-15 minute warm up. The warmups include light stretching and calisthenics. The bulk of the class consists of students learning new techniques or tweaking already-known techniques either as a whole group or small groups split between the instructors. In the adult class, the last 10-15 minutes are dedicated to building students' mobility in an effort to prevent longevity injuries.
What if i have a 5 year old that wants to signup?
Although we do prefer children to be 6 years old before signing up, if you have a 5 year old child who is interested in taking our classes, we offer a trial class. This is so that the instructors can see if they feel that the child will be able to handle the structure and discipline of the class. Please feel free to contact us if you would like to have you 5 year old try out a trial class!
